Job Description

Hancock Natural Resource Group, Inc. (HNRG) founded in 1985, is a registered investment adviser and wholly owned subsidiary of John Hancock/Manulife Financial Corporation. HNRG is based in Boston, Massachusetts and is comprised of two core businesses; Hancock Timber Resource Group (HTRG) which develops and manages timberland investments and Hancock Agricultural Investment Group (HAIG) which develops and manages farmland investments. As of September 30, 2020, HNRG managed $14.1 billion of timberland and farmland, comprising approximately 5.9 million acres located in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile. Hancock Forest Management, Inc. (“HFM”) and Hancock Farmland Services, Inc. (“HFS”) are wholly owned subsidiaries of Hancock Natural Resource Group (“HNRG”)HFM and HFS are property management companies that serve global institutional investors through related-party investment management groups (Hancock Timber Resource Group and Hancock Agricultural Investment Group) and third-party private investors. HFM oversees the timber development and harvesting operations for approximately 3.8million acres of timberland across the USA and Canada. HFS oversees the agricultural assets and operations for approximately 0.3 million acres of farmland throughout the USA. Collectively, HFM and HFS represent the North American property management platform of HNRG.

Farmland Management Services (FMS) is a direct operator of farms in California, Wisconsin and Washington.  FMS provides farm management services for Hancock Agricultural Investment Group (HAIG) as part of HAIG’s integrated farmland investment management platform for institutional investors.  HAIG is a division of Hancock Natural Resource Group, Inc. (HNRG), FMS is an HNRG subsidiary.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  Responsible for the organization, planning, implementation and supervision of farming operations in a manner which optimizes return on investment and good stewardship. Designated trainer for other senior level California Area Managers.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

The Region Manager is responsible to train Area Manager(s) in farming operations and to help them expand their areas of knowledge and responsibilities, including the following:

  • Train and monitor Area Managers on the implementation of effective, efficient, orderly and timely farming operations; Assist Area Managers in preparing operational and capital budgets.

  • Work with the Area and Farm Managers to perform within the total budget framework. 

  • Help them to anticipate and adjust for variable conditions and circumstances that may cause variances from “normal” budgeted figures.

  • Help Area Managers to anticipate and to promptly respond to special circumstances or conditions during the growing season such as weather, pest, diseases, or other extraordinary events.

  • Task the Area managers to achieve yields comparable to or better than the best growers in the region with similar property. 

  • Help them with finding the resources and expertise to do so.

  • Ensure Area Managers prompt reporting of problems or successes; timely completion of monthly management reports; and other industry studies and analysis as needed.

  • Coordinate communication and resources between various management areas and teams to optimize efficiency and safety in operations.

  • Train and assist Area Managers in the effective handling of personnel, contractors, labor, vendors, equipment and processors in a Professional and fair manner.

  • Ensure all Area Manager maintain documentation of vendors insurance (must be on file before work begins).

  • Oversee procurement procedures, both the formal and the informal bidding process, for fairness and compliance.

  • Partner with HR and the Compliance Departments to ensure company policies are followed, personnel are trained properly, and new initiatives are implemented in the field in accordance with set practices.

  • Ensure company safety policies and to propose and evaluate new regulations for necessary updates or changes.

  • Work with all FMS employees to maintain and improve professionalism within and without the company.

  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS:

  • Excellent communication, verbal and written

  • Strong computer, organizational, recordkeeping, and people skills

  • Must be able to work well with management and communicate well with all levels within the company

  • Must be able to deliver presentations to groups and senior level management

  • Willing to take on new properties and complex projects

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four year college degree in Farm Management or Agricultural Business preferred; or at least 15 years’ experience farming, with a minimum of five (5) years in Supervisory role

  • 5+ years’ experience in Farm Management of permanent tree crops

  • Accredited Farm Manager (AFM) certification required, or ability to obtain within 3 years of hire

  • Qualified Applicators License (QAL) preferred

  • Must possess valid driver’s license and be insurable with company’s commercial carrier

  • Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed

  • Must be able to travel regionally and frequently drive long distances

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequent sitting, standing, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds

  • View &  type on mobile phones, tablets, and computer screens for extended periods of time

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed outside, as well as inside an office

  • Performing the essential functions of this job may require the incumbent to work with and/or around hazardous materials, perform lifting and bending, or be exposed to unpleasant scents or hazardous conditions or substances in the field including heat, exhaust or chemicals.
